A couple of years ago we set a vision for ourselves. We knew J had a little sabbatical time banked and we wanted to see if we could stretch it out in a way that let both of us live and study together in Asia. “We want fifteen months of summer,” we said. Visions of leave danced before our eyes.
It took a little finagling and a lot of patience (not to mention a lot of negotiating that let us resolve an uncomfortable two-body situation), but we did it! Starting in June 2018, we’ll be based in Kyoto, where we’ll both have affiliations at Kyoto University. Kim will be a research fellow at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, while Jolyon will be using the Kyoto University library while conducting research for his new book thanks to an SSRC/Japan Foundation Abe Fellowship. We’ll also use Kyoto as a launching point for getting to other parts of Asia for Kim’s research.
